The Mining and Petroleum Competence Board (MPCB) oversees the development of competence standards and the assessment of people who have a role at a mine that may affect health and safety.

MPCB is publishing the annual report from the Resources Regulator on practising certificates and certificate of competence examination results 2018 – 2023 and recommendations to address continuing low numbers of people undertaking and obtaining certificates of competence, and then people not renewing their practising certificate. Refer to the section at the end of this page. 

A webinar will be held for mine operators on Wednesday 16 October 2024 11am to 12pm to discuss implementing the recommendations to improve upon the concerning trends. People can register to attend the webinar

Strategic plan to 2026

The Mining and Petroleum Competence Board has developed a strategic plan for the next three years. The Strategic Plan to 2026 (PDF, 200.25 KB) will contribute to achieving the regulator's goal for a safe, sustainable and innovative mining, extractive and petroleum industry in NSW.

During this period, the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board will pursue four strategies to achieve its objectives:

  • monitor and review competence standards and assessment
  • monitor and oversight of the maintenance of competence scheme
  • emerging issues
  • effective communication.

An action plan has been developed to carry out the strategies, in consultation with relevant stakeholders. The Mining and Petroleum Competence Board will regularly review the progress of the plan and report to the Minister on an annual basis.
