Certification

Certification is of individuals to practice in safety critical statutory functions competently and maintain that competence, contributing to overall mine safety and health in NSW mines and quarries.

The Resources Regulator administers a certification process designed to have and maintain the minimum standards of competence for individuals. 

This interconnected certification process certifies that individuals have the underpinning competence to practise in their statutory function, with requirements varying according to the function under the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation and gazettes made. 

1. Determine the required certification for your specific statutory function

2. Check eligibility and requirements

What are requirements of the specific statutory function you're pursuing?

Are you applying for a certificate of competence holding overseas qualifications?

Are you applying for a Practising certificate and seeking recognition of an interstate or New Zealand certificate?

3. Apply to register to sit a certificate of competence exam

Check the exam calendar. Register/login to the Regulator Portal and navigate to the Mining Workers section.

Complete the application. Pay application fee (PDF, 82.51 KB) and submit.

4. Exam registration

Register for exam via the Mining Workers section of the Regulator Portal.

Receive approval letter with link to pay applicable exam fee (PDF, 82.51 KB).

Prepare for, and sit, exam.

5. Pass both written and oral exams (as applicable)

Certificate of competence is emailed to you along with a practising certificate, unless you opted out of receiving one. You can apply for a certificate later.

6. Apply for a practising certificate

Login to the Regulator Portal. Complete application, pay fee (PDF, 77.3 KB) and submit.

Receive electronic certificate via the Regulator Portal

7. Maintenance of competence

Fulfil ongoing learning through the period of the practising certificate's validity.

8. Renewal

Providing you have met the conditions of your certificate, including maintenance of competence, certificates require renewal approximately every 5 years.

This provides an ongoing, continuous cycle ensuring individuals continue to meet the required standards of safety critical roles.
