How to apply to be examined to obtain a certificate of competence to practise in one or more statutory functions.

Regulator Portal
To apply to be examined to obtain a certificate of competence and a practising certificate to practise in one or more statutory functions, you will need to:
- stay informed of the Exam calendar and application closing dates
- complete an online application form via the Regulator Portal
- provide evidence of your identity, age, portfolio, qualifications, and experience.
If you are able to satisfy these criteria, you may then be eligible to undertake the written and oral exams applicable to the certificate you are applying to obtain.
Application process
1. Be informed and prepare
- Read the Applying for a certificate of competence guide (PDF, 155.04 KB). You must read this guide before completing the application form. Otherwise your application may be incomplete and not satisfy the requirements. You may not be invited to undertake the exams.
- Review the requirements of the specific statutory function you are applying for.
- Gather necessary prerequisites and work samples that demonstrate qualifications and experience in line with portfolio and competency requirements.
- Subscribe to Mine Safety News to receive upcoming exam information and regulation changes.
- Attend briefing sessions regarding exam process and expectations. Register your interest at least one month before the scheduled briefing session for your function.
- Review the exam calendar and submit your application before the specified closing date.
- Note: applications may be rejected if information supplied is insufficient, for example, experience.
- Note: we may ask you for additional information that must be submitted via email by the due date specified.
2. Complete and pay for application
- Apply online via the Regulator Portal.
- Pay the application fee through the portal’s secure third party payment gateway (Humanitix).
- Submit certified copies (PDF, 83.58 KB) of all required documents including qualifications, work experience certificates and identification.
- You should use the option to register to sit the exams, which will be accepted, if your application is approved.
- Ensure the application is submitted before the closing date. Allow time for your application to be assessed.

Application fee
- You must pay the application fee for each attempt to undertake an examination through the third party payment gateway (Humanitix).
- The payment date and receipt number details are to be submitted with your complete application via the Regulator Portal, prior to the closing date.
- The application fee is non-refundable if your application is incomplete, unsuccessful or if you withdraw.
Examination fees
- Payment of examination fees are only applicable once you receive an approval letter with a link to pay.
- Fees depend on the specific certificate of competence statutory function(s) you are applying for, as well as the number of written and, if applicable, oral examinations you are required to complete.

Am I eligible for a refund of fees?
- Please refer to the Fact sheet: Exam fee schedule (PDF, 91.31 KB)
- The exam fee is refundable, less a $50 administration fee, only where notification of non-attendance is received in advance of the exam date.
- Refunds only refers to exam fees paid. Application fees remain non-refundable.
