Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified people for consideration for appointment as an independent member of the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council.
About the council
The council is a tripartite committee established under the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013. The council aims to foster a resources sector with safety as a core value. The council has the following functions under the Act:

to provide advice to the Minister on any policy matter relating to work health and safety in mines
-
any other advisory functions relating to work health and safety in mines that is prescribed by the Regulations.
The council’s membership comprises high-level stakeholders representing employers and workers within the industry and independent members with relevant expertise.
Role of an independent member
Independent members provide expert assistance to the council regarding work health and safety in mines, in respect of both current and emerging issues.
Selection criteria
Applicants should provide a resume, details of two referees and evidence of how they satisfy the following criteria:
- expertise relating to work health and safety, including in mining
- capacity to identify and analyse developments in work health and safety in the mining industry
- proven judgement, objectivity, critical thinking, and impartiality
- capacity to understand and manage conflicts of interest
- ability to contribute to the effectiveness of the council and listen attentively to other's opinions
- ability to analyse information and make a constructive contribution to discussion\significant professional expertise and judgment.
Complementary skills, including capacity to pursue reform or improvement opportunities, may also be considered.
An independent member must be independent of the mining industry stakeholder organisations who nominate people for appointment to the Council.
Remuneration and appointment term
The council meets four times per year. Independent members are eligible for a sitting fee of $1,000 per day in accordance with the Public Service Commission’s Boards and Committees Classification Framework.
The appointment is for a term of up to 3 years. Suitable candidates will be subject to a probity check before appointment.
